After a successful mushroom outing on Saturday, I decided to hike in the PPL Wetlands in Salem Township Sunday morning. I wanted to see how the recent heavy rains and flooding affected the wetlands. When I arrived I found the river still high from the rains , and the wetlands infested with swarms of mosquitoes. trees along a flooded Susquehanna River

The rains had not only  filled the existing ponds and canals with water  but also created large areas of flooding which provided additional breeding grounds for the mosquitoes. There used to be a trail here. It is now under water. flooded trail in wetlands

And there were swarms of mosquitoes. I don’t think I had ever received as many mosquito bites as I did on Sunday. I walked through the wetlands and actually had difficulty taking photographs because of the dozens of mosquitoes that buzzed around my head. duckweed covered pond

As bad as they were, they are part of nature too. And serve a purpose, providing food for the birds, spiders and dragonflies also living in the wetlands. <a
